Kazakhstan-based Air Astana plans to master base maintenance for Boeing 787 widebody aircraft, Robert Dando, director of the carrier’s technical center, said at the MRO Central Asia: Kazakhstan conference held in Astana in early December. By 2035, the airline expects to receive 18 aircraft of this type, which will form the basis of its long-haul fleet.

According to Dando, one of the two new hangars the carrier plans to build at Almaty Airport will be equipped for Boeing 787 maintenance. The second hangar will be dedicated to service Airbus A320 narrowbody jets. Air Astana already services the latter up to the 12-year C-Check level.

“We plan to do all the C-check maintenance in-house on 787 as well,” Dando explained.

The new hangars in Astana, as well as another one in Almaty, will also be used to set up component workshops, including the one for aircraft engines.

The Kazakh carrier plans to receive its first two Boeing 787-9s in the second half of 2026, and the third in early 2027. This will enable it to launch new longhaul flights, including its first flights to the USA. In November of this year, Air Astana ordered 15 more aircraft of this type for delivery in 2032–2035.
