Azerbaijan Airlines receives first A321neo
The aircraft could replace widebody Boeing 787s on long-haul routes
Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) has taken delivery of the first Airbus A321neo passenger jet in its fleet. The aircraft arrived in Baku from the European manufacturer’s assembly line in Hamburg on June 25.
The new aircraft was acquired through the Irish leasing company AerCap, from which AZAL ordered three A321neos and three smaller A320neos in 2024. All of these aircraft will be powered by CFM LEAP-1A engines.
“AerCap is very pleased to be the first lessor to introduce the A321neo to AZAL, helping the airline to expand and modernize its fleet,” said Peter Anderson, Chief Commercial Officer, AerCap.
The newly delivered A321neo, registered as VP-BCP, is configured to carry up to 191 passengers, including 12 business class seats. It is equipped with a next-generation in-flight entertainment (IFE) system and high-speed Wi-Fi, allowing passengers to access digital services and stay connected throughout the flight.
However, the latter type can significantly expand the Azerbaijani carrier’s capabilities due to its 7,400 km range. This range is sufficient, for instance, for flights from Baku to Beijing, a route where AZAL currently deploys widebody Boeing 787 airliners.
With the introduction of this next-generation aircraft, AZAL’s narrowbody fleet now includes the Airbus A319ceo, A320ceo, A320neo, and A321neo.
As part of its long-term development strategy, AZAL plans to expand its fleet to 50 aircraft by 2032.
“The delivery of the A321neo, following the recent induction of our A320neo aircraft, supports our ambition to build a modern, efficient, and passenger-focused fleet that will meet the evolving needs of Azerbaijan’s aviation sector and our growing customer base,” said Jamil Manizade, Chief Commercial Officer, Azerbaijan Airlines.
