Azerbaijan Airlines posts 5% passenger traffic growth in H1 2026 despite regional headwinds
Azeri flag carrier improves key operational metrics, boosted by fleet modernization
Network expansion, fleet modernization with next-generation aircraft, and digital service enhancements drove a 5% year-on-year (Y-on-Y) increase in passenger traffic for Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) during the first half of 2026. The positive performance was sustained despite complex geopolitical headwinds in the neighboring Middle East.
From January to June, AZAL carried a total of 1.9 million passengers. International sectors accounted for the bulk of this volume, carrying 1.6 million passengers (+4% Y-on-Y). Notably, the carrier saw a 40% surge in transit traffic, which reached 276,000 passengers, signaling the growing role of Baku (GYD) as a regional hub.
During the six-month period, the airline scaled up operations to 8,462 flights (+7% Y-on-Y), including 6,566 international sectors (+7% Y-on-Y). AZAL reported a solid average passenger load factor of 79%, while maintaining strong operational reliability with an on-time performance rate of 81%.
On its primary domestic route, Baku–Nakhchivan, the airline operated 1,868 flights (+7% Y-on-Y) to transport 367,651 passengers (+7% Y-on-Y).
Capacity growth was supported by the ongoing renewal of the carrier’s narrowbody fleet. Since the beginning of the year, AZAL took delivery of three next-generation aircraft: two Airbus A320neos and one higher-capacity A321neo—marking the debut of the A321neo variant in the airline’s fleet. These deliveries bring AZAL’s total active fleet to 29 aircraft.
On the network side, the airline added direct scheduled services to Shymkent, Kazakhstan. AZAL’s scheduled network now encompasses 52 destinations, up two routes compared to the same period last year.
The carrier’s top-performing international routes included Moscow, Istanbul, Tbilisi, Tel Aviv, and Ankara. Traffic distribution among these high-demand destinations was shaped by shifting regional dynamics, including the ongoing military conflict involving Israel/the US and Iran, alongside the continued normalization of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Russia.
