Cathay Cargo is adjusting its global freighter network by introducing Astana, Kazakhstan (NQZ), as an intermediate stop on its Asia–Europe services starting August 1, as announced last month.

The cargo division of the Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific will utilize the Kazakh capital’s airport as a temporary stop for European freighter routes during the summer navigation season, replacing its usual intermediate stops in India. The operational pivot comes amid ongoing logistical and airspace challenges across the Middle East.

Cathay Cargo had previously routed its primary Asia–Europe freighter flights through Dubai, but its Gulf freighter operations are currently suspended. The carrier stated it remains hopeful of resuming operations through Dubai in the medium term.

Under the revised routing, Cathay Cargo will operate five weekly flights using its fleet of Boeing 747 freighters (B747-8F and B747-400F). Departing from Hong Kong, the aircraft will make the technical stop in Astana before continuing onward to key European destinations—including Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and London—and returning to Hong Kong.
